iPhone 15 plus worth it in 2024?

So this is the iPhone 15 plus, yeah you guys must have my ipad unboxing earlier but this is my first iPhone.

Nice box, opens up smoothly.

We have the phone on top.

Moving that to the side for now we have a USB-C to USB-C cable. iPhones have shifted to USB-C now which is a big plus as we can share chargers between android and iPhones now.

We have a sim eject tool,

safety document and

one apple sticker. One!

I’ve not used the sticker I had from my ipads anywhere too so not much of a problem.

And you can see there’s no charger included in the box. Other brands like Samsung, Google pixel have also started removing the charger from the box. They say it’s to save the environment, I call it profits.

Here’s the phone, I chose, ahem no my son chose black and this is how it looks. This is the 128gb version.

We have the power button on the right and

the volume buttons with a switch above that allows switching to silent mode easily.

I’ve had tons of elderly neighbours complaining that they can’t hear the phone ringing, this is generally the problem.

Here’s my son’s old phone, which was my old S20 plus, this was a temporary phone until he finished his 12th. Now that he’s going to start college soon he needed a new phone as the lines on screen were getting too many. Samsung this is a knife to the back to a loyal Samsung device user.

Get the sim card out of the old phone, and the S20 plus has a MicroSD card expansion slot which they eventually dropped after the S20 series. They want your money for higher storage just like apple.

This is the sim tray on the apple iPhone, single Sim nothing else.

Insert it in and…

OK, now that we have everything let’s turn the iPhone on.

Make sure your older device is accessible if you want to copy data over to the new phone, especially what’s app.

Basic setting options are displayed   like country, home page design, Wi-Fi, apple id login, face id setup.

Now that both phones are on the same Wi-Fi, we need to install move to iOS app on the android phone.

Once you do that the iPhone searches for devices and finds the S20 plus through the app.

We need to enter a one time code and I’m selecting everything to be copied onto his new phone. WhatsApp in android uses Google drive to backup which uses apple cloud storage on iOS. So the backup Cannot be synced, so we need to use this roundabout way to sync messages. Get chats ready for backup, now copy. It’s going to take some time and I’m connecting them to power so that they don’t turn off while copying.

It’s the next day and the files are all copied, contacts, photos, and WhatsApp too.

This phone was released on 12th September 2023 so it’s close to a year old. The plus variant of the iphone 15 plus comes with a 6.7 inch Super Retina XDR OLED 1290×2796 display with a pixel density of 460.

Refresh rate is 60hz, which is slow compared to even some budget android phones, but It didn’t look bad to me at all. iOS is pretty smooth and if you’re not spoiled by a faster refresh rate the 60hz won’t bother you too much.

Colors are really great with a max of 1000 nits of brightness and peak 2000 nits which would really help with visibility outdoors in bright sunlight.

The dynamic island continues on from the iPhone 14. This section also houses the dot projector which is used for face id, which is the only biometric method to unlock the phone. We do have pin and password too.

The SOC powering the phone is Apples own 64 bit ARM based A16 bionic hexa core processor.

, the same as the 14 pro, which is no slouch, all standard tasks, this soc will handle like a champ. Raytracing and AAA gaming of course is limited to the pro series again

Which has the new A17 pro soc. RAM is 6 Gb.

Cameras, we have two on the back, one 48 megapixel f1.6 primary camera and a 12 megapixel f2.4 camera.

We have a depth sensor and the led flash here.

The front has a single 12 megapixel f1.9 camera.

Weight is approximately 200 grams, not that heavy.

The phone is available in black, blue ,green, pink and yellow.

But the hues look to be a lighter shade kind of like a matte frosted look, the camera bump shows the actual colour.

The phone supports nano sim cards as with most phones nowadays.

Connectivity, we have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ax so all types are covered. Bluetooth is version 5.03. We also have NFC support. Of course 3g,4g,5g support is available.

USB-C support is a godsend , for charging and also connecting external usb drives. Do note the iPhone 15 is capped at usb 2.0 speeds, so don’t expect blazing speeds while copying files over, but it is similar to how fast the lightning connector data speeds were. The pro and pro max support usb 3.0 speeds.

Attaching an external drive allows backing up all your photos and other data keeping the internal storage free.

The model I’ve picked is the 128gb version as the price increases ridiculously for each incremental bump, so this helps a lot.

Charging is not affected in any way and still uses 20 watts wired. Wireless charging is also supported, and If you need a cool wireless charger I have this one by daily objects which also supports magsafe allowing you to place your phone vertically or horizontally. When horizontal we get this cool standby screen which you can customize as you see fit.

I also have this magsafe case from daily objects which has a ring allowing you to hold your phone safely or place it down like a stand.

The case allows using magsafe compatible accessories like this powerbank which can attach like so and charge your phone wirelessly. If you want it to charge faster use the usb-c to usb-c cable.

Cool right, a dedicated video is coming soon. Check out the description for links to the products.

Cameras on the iPhone were always good, the 48 megapixel wide lens takes really good pictures.

The 48 megapixel mode allows for a 2x zoom which doesn’t lose quality as the image is stored in higher resolution. When you use the digital zoom mode the 48 megapixel image is binned down to 12 megapixels.

The shot’s look really clear, and the colour accuracy is  really good.

We also have other features like night mode, portrait mode, cinematic mode, action mode etc. the phone also stores a live shot which is around a second of live movement before the shutter is pushed.

The 12 megapixel ultra wide shots also look great and this is how it looks.

Video is also clear and the stabilization is also pretty good. 4k video is supported and the iPhone is supposed to be the best at recording video.

The lens is still affected by the lens flare when pointing it at bright lights, not a deal breaker, but it happens.

Now for the battery life, this is the main reason we chose the iPhone 15 plus, it’s really great, and it can last an entire day with around 20-30% remaining at the end of the day.

The iPhone 15 plus has the best battery life of all the iPhone 15’s except the pro max which just about edges it out. But at this price point, it’s really good.

The phone came installed with iOS 17, and 18 is close to release. The iPhone 16 should be releasing around September, which is when iOS 18 might go live too. And the iPhone 15 plus being supported for at least 5 years of updates will get the new AI and customization features.

So who is this phone for, well it looks to be targeted at users who want to get into the apple ecosystem and not want to spend tons of money on the pro series phones. These standard and plus series phones provide most of the features that are on the pro with a stable and powerful processor and plus with its great battery life would be great for users who want at least a day long battery life. Gaming is pretty smooth, and my son has been playing Genshin Impact, PUBG, ROBLOX on the phone and with all the social media scrolling throughout the day the battery lasts and he’s happy. The camera is also really good, you can’t go wrong with this one for daily use or even pro use.

Would I suggest this phone, it’s a great all round phone, there are some quirks which does take getting used to but still there’s nothing wrong with it too. It’s easy to recommend to anyone who would have a budget for one, as it is easy to use, has a great camera, powerful processor. I would have liked more storage though at least start at 256 GB, it did take them a long time to shift to 128 minimum from 64 so this is still a plus. with the iPhone 16 round the corner there are going to be more sales as apple will want to clear inventory to make space for the new iPhone. When I picked it up via Amazon it had  a bank discount of 4000 Rs and a cashback of Rs 3500. So effectively I picked it up at around 73k, which is still high, but a decent price for last years model.

So what do you guys think, was it worth it? Make sure to comment below.
